The Green movement encourages energy conservation, and the federal government is extending additional tax credits for home improvement projects and products that support this initiative.

Sealing and insulating the "envelope" or "shell" of your home — its outer walls, ceiling, windows, doors, and floors — is often the most cost effective way to improve energy efficiency and comfort. ENERGY STAR estimates that a knowledgeable homeowner or skilled contractor can help you save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs (or up to 10% on their total annual energy bill) by sealing and insulating.

Thanks to The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, from January 1, 2009, through December 31, 2010, you can complete the project of your dreams and qualify for a tax credit up to $1,500.

Section 1121 of the Stimulus Bill allows for a federal energy tax credit to homeowners, up to 30% of the cost of the product (up to a maximum $1,500 for taxable years 2009 and 2010). The tax credit is for the cost of the product only and does not include the cost of installation.
